Poetry

                                Limerick

There once was a guy name Danny
Who lived uptown with his granny
He had a big waist
And such good taste
That he married the pretty girl name Annie.

                                Cinquain

                          Beach

                    Quiet      Calm

   Bathing        Relaxing        Playing

                 It's the place to be

                           Fun

How did you feel after reading the two pieces above?  Would you be interested in writing if this was what teachers expected from you as a writer?
Now that you have considered your feelings, take a second to imagine how a child would feel about writing if they are introduced to it using these pieces.  Unfortunately, the perception that most students have of writing is that it is a long and mundane process.  They often see it as something that is frustrating, as teachers are always 'nagging' about their Vocabulary, Grammar, Spelling, Phonics and other conventions of writing.  Such occurrences perpetuates the negative views of writing, as early as the infant grades.  However, every teacher holds the cure to this issue, in the form of poetry.

Poetry is literary work in which the expression of feelings and ideas are given intensity by the use of distinctive style and rhythm.  In this definition, we can see that poetry not only encompasses literary work, but it also emphasizes the need for freedom of expression and ideas.  This component of writing is often lost when teachers engage students in writing instruction as they usually determine students' topics, sequence and styles of writing.  With poetry, the students can divulge their feelings and ideas in the absence of strict conventions and a teacher's expectations.  This will allow students to feel the need to put their ideas on paper as poetry accepts everything that they have to say.  Upon the completion of writing their poems, teachers should then give students the opportunities to entertain their peers by reciting, publishing and performing their work.

Not only can poetry be used as an intriguing way to develop students' love for writing, but it can also be used to teach students the different conventions of writing, while their remain entertain and interested.  In poems like the haiku and the cinquain, teachers can teach students about syllables and the continuous tense of verbs, respectively.  Furthermore, areas like rhyming, word families and adjectives can also be taught using poetry.  This will develop a sense of interest and motivation for students to learn such aspects of writing, as it is done in context, rather than in isolation.

When students have developed the love and willingness to put pen to paper through poetry, we can then introduce students to other forms of expression through writing.  These will take the form of the different genres of writing: descriptive writing, narrative writing, exposition and argumentative writing.

One may argue that every genre of writing allows students to be expressive and therefore question the need for poetry.  While every genre indeed caters to expression, poetry provides the most welcoming, interesting, expressive and entertaining platform for writing, and our students love to entertain and be entertained.  This was made clear to us as the lecturer did an outstanding job at allowing us to see the importance of poetry through various interesting activities.  For this reason, our suggestion to every teacher, is to incorporate poetry into your writing classroom, and contemplate introducing writing through this genre.

  1. After this lesson, I have developed a greater love and appreciation for poetry. Poetry allows you to express your ideas, feelings or to tell a story in a specific form . When returning to the classroom I will incorporate poetry in my instruction so it can stimulate students interest thus, allowing them to learn in a fun way. I will also encourage my students to write poems so they too can develop a greater love for it.

  2. I agree that most students think that writing is a long and cumbersome process because when they write they have to take a lot into consideration such as their grammar, spelling, phonics, sentence structure, vocabulary etc. I don't blame them because taking all these things into consideration will eventually get you frustrated. For that reason, they may feel the same way about poetry. I look at poetry as a way to stimulate interest in the classroom especially when beginning a lesson because of the way some poems are structured. It serves as a platform for an individual to express their ideas and feelings. Poetry can also be used to culminate a lesson interestingly in order to decrease boredom.

Finally, I think that your beginning pieces were amazingly put together and I see myself using one of these pieces in the introductory section of my lessons in the near future. Very Detailed Post!

  3. To some extent, I must agree with you that poetry provides a welcoming, interesting, expressive and entertaining platform for writing mainly because there is no set structure. The write is in charge and can do as he or she pleases.

I must say that after our poetry class, my eyes have been opened regarding the use of poetry as an instructional tool. I will surely consistently make use of poetry in my classroom.

  4. I must say that I have developed a greater love and appreciation for poetry. This episode was very enlightening as it made me realize how poetry can be very useful in our classrooms , not just to entertain but also to teach multiple concepts across the curriculum. I believe that the knowledge acquired here will help us become more competent as we utilize the deliberate use of poetry to entertain and engage our students meaningfully.

  5. Many teachers including myself are of the belief that we are not skilled enough to teach our students to write poetry. Due to the numerous fascinating activities used by the course instructor in today's lesson about poetry writing, I obtained a deeper understanding of this wonderful genre of writing. I must admit after this session I grew a passion for poetry because of the many ways in which it can be utilized in the classroom. Not only can students use poetry to express their ideas, feelings or to tell a story using lines or stanzas but also, poetry can be used to teach various concepts across the curriculum. I can avow that the knowledge gained from today's lesson changed my perception about poetry writing and moving forward this a genre of writing I will be including in my classroom instruction.

  6. I enjoyed this session as it delved into and picked apart on of my favourite genres of writing: poetry. Long before today's class, I found joy in reading and writing poems. I often wondered where I fit among all the authors of the different types of poems and in this class, I found out. I belong with the free-form poets. What I did learn in today's class was that poetry can be used as the vessel through which students gain a wide variety of knowledge without them ever realizing it!

  7. Poetry is indeed a genre of writing with the purpose of entertaining the audience. In the process of being entertained, learning is taking place. I used to think that poetry was only for persons who want to be funny or in love. As stated in this piece, poetry can be used for teaching word families. adjectives and many other content areas across the curriculum. If teachers before adopted this genre of writing to engage students in writing and also for teaching, I would by now have mastered this .

  8. Poetry is an outlet for many of our inner thoughts and desires. There are no boundaries and there are no limits. Poetry is meant to express reality and this reality can simply be your reality as opposed to someone else's reality. Students are allowed to engage in some form of "free writing" in poetry because they are allowed to write freely on what or how they feel. This adds to the usefulness and significance of poetry in the classroom. We as teachers should be poetic ourselves so that we can reflect what we require of our students. We all are poets and poets are powerful because they can make anything happen!!

  11. It is fact that writing can become frustrating to the students considering that the students are struggling with vocabulary, grammar and spelling, to name a few.

The onus is on teachers to ensure that the students improve on their weak areas and to encourage them to develop a love for writing.

Poetry is one type of writing which teachers should incoperate in the classrooms so that students could familiarize themselves with it. This can be done by create poems to teach various concepts, transitions from one subject to the next or class activity to the next.

Rhymes, sound devices and figurative languages are used to enhance poems and make them powerful.
